Birdwatching in Heartopia: beginner guide (Scanner, stars, recycling)

Birdwatching is a calm hobby, but early on it punishes two things: getting too close (birds flee) and taking unfocused photos (you get an invalid card).

Once you understand aim + pose + distance, it becomes a reliable way to fill your collection and farm daily rewards (and sometimes Gold).

How to unlock Birdwatching

After the tutorial, you can unlock hobbies in any order as you earn Hobby Expansion Tickets (via D.G Level). Birdwatching is taught by Bailey J., located above the pet shop in the town center.

For tickets and the unlock flow, see the beginner's guide and hobby upgrade tips.

How to spot birds

The basic loop is simple, but it's strict about focus and distance.

  1. Equip the Scanner (inventory/toolbox)
  2. Find a bird and keep your distance
  3. Aim until the reticle locks on
  4. Press to take the photo
  5. You receive a Bird Info Card with stars

If birds keep fleeing, you're moving too fast or standing too close. Slow down, stop, then aim.

The loop is: equip the Scanner, lock the reticle on the bird, take the photo, and receive an Info Card. Quality depends on focus, pose, and distance.

Invalid cards vs valid cards

If the bird is out of focus, or you lose lock during the shot, you'll get an invalid card.

Invalid Bird Card

Out of focus / broken lock

Invalid Bird Card

Usually happens when you shoot too fast, break lock, or the bird isn't centered. Re-center, lock again, and hold steady for a moment.

  • Re-center the bird in the reticle
  • Don't sprint into the bird
  • Hold your aim steady for a moment before shooting
Average Bird Card

Valid shot

Average Bird Card

A valid shot gives you a usable card. Next goal: capture better poses/actions to increase star rating.

  • Maintain lock-on
  • Keep the bird centered
  • Avoid sudden movement while aiming

Key upgrade: Action Recognition helps identify new poses instead of tagging them as "unknown".

Star rating is mostly about poses/actions

Stars reflect what the bird was doing when you took the photo:

  • 1 star: idle/simple pose
  • 2-3 stars: common action (turning, chirping, feeding)
  • 4-5 stars: stronger action (display, flight, rarer animation)

If you're stuck at 1 star, don't spam photos from the same angle. Wait for a different action, then scan again.

Perfect Photo: when it's worth the risk

Perfect Photo unlocks at Birdwatching level 4. It gives +1 star when the bird is centered and the photo is taken closer than usual (without spooking it).

Perfect Photo upgrade in Birdwatching
Perfect Photo gives +1 star when you take a centered, up-close photo without scaring the bird away. Unlocks at level 4.

Always try for a Perfect Photo when you can. Take one "test" shot first to confirm your angle and distance, then go for the closer shot so you don't waste the attempt.
